Music at the Monument

 Hello WHUR Family,

WHUR 96.3 invites you to join Darryl Haley for a
spring-summer concert series nestled in the trees, on the grounds of the Washington Monument at the Sylvan Theatre.

Music at the Monument (#MusicMon) is a musical jam session at the Sylvan Theatre on the National Monument Grounds. These events offer an opportunity to address goals and facilitate change through instrumental, vocal and songwriting. The featured performers are veterans, local and federal government employees, and youth; and represent various programs that use music as a form of relaxation, communication, youth development and the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The concerts take place twice a month and highlight veterans, youth musicians and other artist. Performances include Jazz, R&B, Country, Pop, U.S. military veterans and military Orchestra.

Desiree Jordan

Desiree Jordan: Soul

About Desiree Jordan:

A native of the Washington, D.C. Metro area, developed her musical prowess as a member of the renowned Washington Performing Arts Society’s gospel choir, and has performed on famed stages from The John F. Kennedy Center and Zanzibar on the Waterfront in Washington, DC; to Greenhouse, Comix Theater, The Shrine, B.B. Kings Blues Club, and The Bitter End in New York City.

She is also a member vocalist of the revamped Roy Ayres Music Project (R.A.M.P); an American soul/jazz band of the 70’s whose music works have been sampled by R&B notables such as Erykah Badu, and Q-Tip from a Tribe Called Quest. Whether she’s performing solo or with her band, Desiree is always moving in an effort to “Keep Good Music Alive”!

You can find her new single, “Misunderstood,” on iTunes, and her debut EP, titled “I Am Desiree Jordan”, is slated for release in 2015.

Kia Bennett

Kia Bennett: Soul

About Kia Bennett:

A native of Richmond,Virginia and a product of Howard University, Kia
made her introduction into the entertainment world while singing with
former Washington D.C. group “Entyme” along with other respected soul
artists Geno Young, Sy Smith, and Yahzarah.

Kia is a member of the new school RAMP (Roy Ayers Music Production) whose musical contributions provided the world with samples for hits like  A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebum”, Mary J. Blige’s “My Life” and Erykah Badu’s
“Amerykah’s Promise”. Ms. Bennett is best noted for her soothing background vocals which blessed international recording artists D’Angelo, Ledisi, Russell Taylor, Michael Bolton, Julie Dexter, and Deborah Bond.

Kia was nominated for 2012 Best New Artist for SoulTracks Readers Choice Awards. Kia is also a member of the The Recording Academy (Grammys).

Anita King

Anita King: Jazz-Vocal

About Anita King:

Anita King’s soulful and melodic voice has swept across the Washington, DC area and brought her to sing in legendary venues across the United States and Europe as a Jazz vocalist, a memeber of award winning choral ensembles and at events as large as presidential inaugurals, the Vatican or even the Super Bowl.  

Anita discovered her love for Jazz in her adult years.  She studied under local Jazz voice and piano instructors. She has performed in wonderful Jazz venues such as Washington, DC’s legendary Blues Alley, Twins Jazz and other well known spots within the metropolitan area. Ms. King recently returned from a month long Jazz tour in Russia wheres she’s toured many times; as well as Israel.

Currently, Ms. King is  geared up over her debut release of her new Jazz cd: SULTRY. Sultry is a collection of Anita’s favorite Jazz standards with a laid back vibe. She is very proud and excited about her very first CD.

About Proper

Band Members: James Funk, John Buchanan, Wayne Davis, Lloyd Pinchback, Tony Brown, Diallo Foster, Antonio Robinson, Julano Myers. 

Our major mentor and inspiration was Chuck Brown, who, along with the Soul Searchers, was actually pivotal in creating the style of music known as DC Go-Go.
