Help send more than 300 students to Volunteer in Seven (7) U.S. Cities to to Attack Poverty, Education and Other Social Issues

WASHINGTON (Feb. 5, 2013) – Howard University radio, WHUR 96.3 FM, will host a 12-hour radiothon, “Helping Hands,” Sunday, March 3, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise $50,000 to send more than 300 Howard University students to Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans and across Washington where they will help families wrestling with issues ranging from illiteracy to gun violence.

The effort is part of the University’s continuing Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program. Every year, hundreds of Howard students forgo the comforts of home or vacationing on beaches in Florida or the Caribbean to help those in need during their weeklong break from classes.

Now in its 19th year, Howard University’s ASB program is coordinated through the Office of the Dean of the Chapel. The program expanded dramatically in 2006 as more than 400 Howard students volunteered to go to New Orleans to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Since then, hundreds of students have traveled annually to cities across the nation.
