Garry Shider, a guitarist for the pioneering group Parliament-Funkadelic, has died at the age of 56.
Shider was born in Plainfield, N.J., and joined Parliament-Funkadelic full-time in 1972. He co-wrote a number of the group’s songs, and is featured on such P-Funk hits as “Cosmic Slop” (1973) and “One Nation Under a Groove” (1978). The two linked bands, Parliament and Funkadelic, helped establish the funk genre in the 1970s.
Shider was known as “Diaperman” because of his habit of wearing a loincloth as his onstage costume.
He died at his home in Upper Marlboro, MD. He had been diagnosed as having brain and lung cancer earlier in the year.
Shider was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Parliament-Funkadelic in 1997. The link below is Gary doing his classic "Cosmic Slop" please watch and enjoy. Gary is gone but his funk will live forever
