Audra McDonald becomes the most decorated actress in the events history.
When Audra McDonald walked off the stage with the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emersons Bar and Grill, it made her the most decorated actress in the events history.
Last nights win broke a three-way tie for most Tonys that McDonald had held with Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris. Harris, who died last year, also had six Tonys, but one was an honorary tribute to her career. Prior to last nights win, Audra McDonald had won Tony Awards for her performances in Carousel in 1994, Master Class in 1996, Ragtime in 1998, A Raisin in the Sun in 2004, and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess in 2012. She received Tony nominations for Marie Christine and 110 in the Shade. She has also appeared in numerous television series and films including Private Practice and Wit. She has been nominated for three Emmy Awards and one Grammy award.
