Charges Filed In Death Of PG Firefighter

A man linked to the shooting death of a Prince George’s County firefighter is under indictment on charges that don’t include murder. A grand jury has indicted Darrell Lumpkin on gun charges in the April incident that left 37-year-old John Ulmschneider dead. When Ulmschneider and another firefighter went to Lumpkin’s home in Temple Hills in response to a medical welfare check, Lumpkin reportedly says he thought it was a home invasion so he fired in self-defense. Authorities say Lumpkin was not allowed to own a gun due to his prior criminal record.

A news release from ABC and ESPN calls the town hall a “national conversation about race relations, justice, policing and equality.”

Judge To Issue Verdict Monday in Latest Freddie Gray Officer Trial

A Baltimore judge says he will issue his verdict on Monday morning in the latest trial of a police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray. The judge heard closing arguments today in the case against Lieutenant Brian Rice, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct. Prosecutors say Rice’s actions “formed a chain” that ended in Gray’s death last year, including failing to seat-belt him in a police transport van. Defense attorneys describe Rice’s actions as “reasonable” because seat-belting an uncooperative Gray in the confined space of the vehicle was too risky because a gathering crowd was growing unruly.
