Having two black women in a major tennis finals match is nothing new. As long as those two women’s last names were Williams. Now women’s tennis has a new Black female contender to the throne in the name of Sloane Stephens.
In the Australia Open semi final round on Tuesday, 19 year old Stephens beat the 31 year old champion Williams, stunning the 15-time majors winner 3-6. 7-5, 6-4 in a colossally dramatic affair.
Tennis has a new powerhouse with chiseled biceps and a strong serve game…and it looks like “Black Girls Rock” will continue to be the anthem on the grass and clay courts for the foreseeable future.
