Producer/singer Jermaine Dupri is responsible for some of Mariah Carey’s biggest hits — “We Belong Together,” “Always Be My Baby” and “Shake It Off,” to name a few — and now he will guide her career too.
Dupri will take over management duties, a representative for Carey announced Monday. Mariah was previously managed by former ‘American Idol’ judge and longtime collaborator, Randy Jackson.
“A multi-talented artist of Mariah’s caliber should be doing everything imaginable. I’m sure others have said this, but not the way I intend to do it. For me, it’s about the execution,” Jermaine Dupri said in a statement.
Carey spent a season judging talent on “American Idol,” which she left earlier this year to shift her focus back to music. She announced that she was prepping a world tour that would begin in Asia in October.
During her brief stint on “Idol,” Carey launched her comeback single, “#Beautiful.” The single has heated up Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart, peaking at No. 4, and is lifted from her long-in-the-works (and delayed) 13th studio album, “The Art of Letting Go.”
Jermaine Dupri is also responsible for launching the careers of Kris Kross, Jagged Edge, Da Brat, Bow Wow and Xscape as part of his So So Def record label.
