Strong In The City: Stop The Violence Block Party

Here I am walking down Georgia Ave in Ward 4 enjoying this beautiful day and I see a tent with a sound system being set up. Immediately my block party lovin-caribbean blood began to raise up and I had to go check it out.

Pep Rally for Peace

I was greeted by this sign “Pep Rally for Peace In The Streets”   I said to myself that’s wassup!  I love positive community events like this one.  Apparently I came upon the Back to School Stop the Violence Rally Block Party on 1100 Allison St NW.  The music kicked in, the food and facepainting was set up, the host opened the event with a prayer and it has been on and poppin.  At the time of this writing, Divas on the Move stepped up to the stage and led a Zumba workout! Go Divas!

These two young rappers Chi Chi Monet  ROCKED the mic like pros.  They spit lyrics like “You gotta move everyday, move everyday, move everyday, like Michelle Obama say”  – They went on to rap about vitamins, smoothies, and staying fit. It was quite impressive. Then they blessed the mike with another rap about who they can be when they grow up. I loved it when they said “I could be a lawyer and give them litigation…or I can be a nurse and take care of my patients”  I ate them up!!! They sang with conviction, swagga, stage presence and well written rhymes. The DJ and I looked at each other and were like Whoa — they are no joke! Go Chi Chi! Check out their website (

Ok I’ll be tweeting from the event (@iamnikkistrong) just ’cause I want everyone to be here at least in spirit.  What a pleasant suprise on a Friday afternoon.  For more info on the Georgia Ave Family Support Collaborative, you can go to

I’m headed back to enjoy the show and party for a cause with our community.
